Teams

The Australian Ultimate Championships attracts teams from all over Australia. It is a Club Championship, so more than one team may enter from each state or territory.

Teams qualify and are seeded via four Regional Championships. These are to be held on the 11th and 12th of March in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

There are two divisions at AUCs. In 2006, the men's division is limited to 20 teams, and the women's division is limited to 16 teams. The difference arises this year because an extra 4 masters teams are being allowed into the men's division in preparation for the World Championships in November.

The actual teams which make it to Nationals will be posted on this site as soon as they are confirmed.

See the Registration page for more information on the registration process.

Qualification

Teams for Nationals need to qualify by playing in their Regional Championships. There are four regions, North, East, South, West and New Zealand. The allocations for 2006 are as follows:

Men

  • N = 2 ( +1 masters)
  • E = 6 ( +1 masters)
  • S = 5 ( +1 masters)
  • W = 2 (+1 masters)
  • Z = 1

Maximum of 20 teams.

Women

  • N = 3
  • E = 9
  • S = 4
  • W = 2
  • Z = 2

Maximum of 20 teams.

Eligibility

These eligibility rules are to encourage teams to have a consistent roster between Regionals and Nationals, since they are two legs of essentially the same tournament, but at minimum ensure that a team will be at least as strong at Nationals as they were at regionals. Teams may pick up additional strong players after regionals, but may not lose them to another team.

If a player attends Regionals:

  • if their team qualifies and attends Nationals, they must play with that team
  • if their team qualifies but decides not to attend, they may play Nationals with any team from that region
  • if their team does not qualify, they may play Nationals with any team from that region, or any team out-of-Region that they have played with during the season or last year's Nationals.

If a player does not attend regionals, they may play Nationals with any team from the region in which they reside, or with any team out-of-Region that they have played with during the season or last year's Nationals.

Additionally, to allow clubs to promote/demote players between regionals and nationals (or fine-tune rosters if they are sending two even teams), two qualified teams may swap up to three players of roughly equal strength between regionals and nationals. The swap must be approved by all captains of teams who attended regionals. Legitimate reasons for swapping include promotion/demotion of players between A and B squads, or fine-tuning rosters in the case of two even teams.

Seeding

Seeding is based on the finish of teams from 2005 Nationals (and prior Nationals) and the results of 2006 Regionals. This information is available as the National Rankings.

Seeding will be released here once the qualifying teams are finalised.
